Rancho Bernardo Track and Field Coaching Staff

Don Jones - Head Coach and Sprints/Hurdles/Relays

Coach Jones opened Rancho Bernardo High School in 1991 and has been the only head coach in the program’s existence. This is his 36th year of coaching track & field. His varsity teams have an overall record of 297 wins, 36 losses and 4 ties (.887%). The school has captured 30 Palomar League titles in its history. At the CIF level the Broncos have been the county champions 11 times and runner ups 8 times at the Division I level. Individually, Coach Jones has been named “Coach of the Year” 20 times by various groups, including the California State CIF, California Coaches Association, San Diego Section CIF, the North County Times, and the Pomerado News. He has been the meet director of the Bronco Track & Field Invitational from 1994- Present. Don has coached 18 San Diego Section CIF champions and has had 37 qualifiers to the California State Track & Field Championships. Coach Jones also coached Cross Country (1991-1999) at RBHS where his teams won 2 Palomar League titles and the 1999 Girls SDCIF Division championship. That team went on to finish 2nd in Division I at the California State Championships. He graduated from El Capitan HS, Grossmont College (A.A.), San Diego State University (B.S.) and Azusa Pacific University (M.S.). He earned seven varsity letters (football, basketball, and track) in high school and earned All-Mission Conference honors at Grossmont College in 1975. He was coached by two “Hall of Fame” coaches (Joe Brooks [El Capitan High School] and Bob Larsen [Grossmont College]). His coaching career includes stints at Mission Bay HS (1977), Grossmont College (1978-’79), Monte Vista HS (1983-’84), Poway HS (1984-’90) and Rancho Bernardo HS (1990-Present). Don teaches Health Science at Rancho Bernardo High School. Don is married to Holly and has three children Katy (30), Devin (18) and Alina (16).

Terry Dockery - Girls Distance Coach

Coach Dockery ran competitively into his mid-50’s.  He ran competitively at Glendale Hoover HS and Glendale Junior College, and San Diego State University.  He began his coaching career as an assistant at Mt. Carmel HS in 1990 and came to Rancho Bernardo HS in 1997.  Coach “Doc” has been coaching Track & Field and Cross Country for 24 years. As Head Coach for cross country, Dockery’s teams have won four San Diego Section CIF titles and qualified 14 times to the California State meet.  He has been named the SDSCIF Cross Country “Coach of the Year” three times and has been the meet director of the Bronco Round Up Cross Country Invitational since 2000.  Under his coaching in track, 22 runners have qualified to the California State meet, with 14 athletes qualifying for the State finals in track.  Coach Doc has had athletes win California State titles in both cross country and track.  He has coached some of the greatest distance runners in San Diego history, including Molly Grabill, who was elected to the San Diego Section CIF Hall of Fame’s initial class in 2011.

Tom Martin - Pole Vault Coach

Coach Martin has been with the Bronco track & field program since its inception in 1991. In that time he has become one of the top pole vault coaches in the United States. He has had 84 athletes qualify to the San Diego Section CIF meet. Nineteen of those athletes have been CIF champions and 41qualified on to the California State meet. Tom has had 13 athletes place at the state finals including three California State Champions. Tom has also had an athlete set the United States High School Federation (USHSF) record (Tracy O’Hara – 13’3”).Coach Martin has had 37 boy vaulters clear 14’0” and 26 girl vaulters clear 10’0”. Tom has earned many awards in his coaching career including the AFLAC Assistant Coach of the Year in 2006 and the United States High School Pole Vault “Coach of the Year in 2012. He is married to Teresa and has a daughter, Chelsea (22).

Marc Lazernik - Sprints and Relays Coach

Coach Lazernik has been with Bronco Track & Field since 2002. In his first year of coaching the high jump his athletes captured both the male and female Division I individual titles . He ran track (sprints) in high school in addition to playing football and basketball. He has also been a freshman football coach for many years working with defensive backs, wide receivers and running backs. Marc graduated from the University of Maryland in 1979 and has been a resource specialist at RBHS since 1999. He has also been the senior class advisor for 15 years. Coach Lazernik is married to Marilyn and has a daughter Emily (20).

Brad Elrod - Sprints and Relays Coach


Coach Elrod has worked with the RBHS Track & Field team for nine years.  Elrod has also been an integral part of the RBHS football coaching staff for 24 years.  He was the Head Varsity Football Coach from 2007-2010, and received the National Football Foundation Coaching Award in 2010 for his contributions to the sport.  He is currently coaching freshman football in addition to his track & field duties. Elrod also taught math and physical education in the Poway Unified School District for 26 years.  Coach Elrod is married to Terry and has two children, Jill (34) and Mike (27), and two grandchildren.
